Keep the first useful items on top

Think about leaving the finishing funnel, collecting the bag and finding an appropriate place to change or add a layer. Put the items needed first where they can be reached without emptying the bag. A dry outer layer buried beneath muddy footwear is not especially helpful when there is nowhere clean to spread things out.

Protect dry clothing inside a suitable inner bag and check how it closes. The event’s bag may identify your belongings without being designed to keep rain out. Do not infer waterproofing from the presence of a drawstring or a shiny surface. Keep travel documents and electronics in their own appropriate protection rather than assuming one outer cover solves every problem.

If you plan to change shoes, pack a separate container for the wet pair. Include anything needed for the actual return journey, such as socks or a layer suitable for waiting at a station. Choose familiar items that fit easily over or replace the running clothes, not an elaborate outfit requiring a private changing room you have not confirmed exists.

Know where you will go next

Check the organiser’s information about bag collection and exit routes. Identify a meeting point that does not block the finish area, and agree an alternative if the weather makes the first location unsuitable. A supporter may be able to carry something, but only if you can actually meet them beyond any controlled area.

Do not count on remaining inside a tent indefinitely. Finish services have their own operating arrangements, and a crowded shelter may need to stay clear. Plan the onward route to transport or accommodation, with a place where you can pause appropriately if needed. Keep the directions available without requiring a long search on a wet phone.

Afterwards, separate wet items from anything that must remain clean for travel and unpack promptly when you can. Note which part of the bag arrangement worked and which item was hard to reach. The improvement for next time may be a different packing order rather than more equipment. A wet finish is easier to manage when the next few actions are already clear.
