Check the collection instructions literally
Find the current organiser’s instructions for your race distance and entry type. Note the collection address, opening window and any documents or codes requested. The address may differ from the start. A confirmation email can also contain information that is not visible on the general event page, so read both before deciding that you are ready.
If somebody else will collect for you, check whether this is allowed and what they must present. Do not assume that a photograph of your confirmation is sufficient. Ask about the actual rule before giving a friend the job, particularly if they are collecting several entries at once. Keep any sensitive documents limited to what the event requires.
Leave space around the visit
Plan to arrive within the window with room for the journey and a queue. The final published collection time should not be your intended arrival at the car park. Check how you will reach the entrance, where a bicycle or car can be left, and whether the venue is accessible from the transport stop you selected.
If the collection area includes stalls, separate browsing time from the essential task. First collect the correct bib and check the name, race and any supplied timing item according to the organiser’s instructions. An unexpected problem is easier to resolve while you are still at the desk than after you have travelled home.
Put the bib where it belongs
At home or at your accommodation, place the bib with the clothing and fastening method you intend to use. Follow the event’s positioning instructions, especially where a timing element is involved. Do not fold or alter components merely to make everything fit a small pocket.
Keep a note of any update received at collection, such as a revised entrance or meeting point. Pass relevant changes to the people travelling with you. Once the essentials are checked, stop moving the bib between bags: a consistent place reduces the chance that it ends up in the clothes left at home. If collection is on race morning, include these checks in the plan rather than assuming there will be time to improvise beside the start.
