Prepare before reaching the tables

Read the event information to understand what is offered and whether you need your own cup or container. Do not base the plan on the last event you attended. Identify what you expect to take before the tables are beside you, and move gradually towards the appropriate side when the course allows it.

Look ahead for runners slowing, volunteers handing items out and people leaving the station. Avoid a sudden diagonal move across the whole flow. If the first table is crowded, check whether there is a clearly available later position instead of forcing a gap. Follow any direction from the people managing the station, especially where the route narrows.

Stop somewhere that leaves the handover clear

If you need to refill, open packaging or reorganise a pocket, move to the designated space or a clear place away from the main handover line. Do not park directly in front of the container that everyone needs. Put your own equipment where you can retain it, and check that you have not left a cap, cup or glove on the table before continuing.

Take the time needed to recognise the item or drink you are receiving. If it differs from what you planned, ask rather than guessing from its appearance. This article is about managing the station, not a universal feeding or drinking schedule. Individual needs and the event conditions vary; familiar, previously tried arrangements are easier to execute than improvised combinations.

Rejoin with attention

Before moving back onto the running line, look for approaching participants and leave them room. A brief pause to close a pocket is better than spilling its contents immediately after rejoining. Use the event’s waste arrangements and carry wrappers to the next suitable disposal point when necessary. Do not assume that dropping something near a table makes it acceptable.

If you are with a friend, agree whether you will regroup beyond the station. Waiting in the middle of the tables can obstruct others, while unexpectedly leaving may trigger a rushed search. Choose a visible point clear of the flow. When reviewing the race afterwards, note any small organisation change that would help next time: a more accessible cup, an easier pocket or a clearer division between collecting and repacking.
