Give the change of movement a purpose
If you prefer planned breaks, decide how you will recognise them before leaving. A timer, a familiar junction or the end of an open stretch can provide a cue. Choose cues that do not require you to stop abruptly in a crowded place. Move aside where necessary and begin walking with enough awareness of other people using the path.
Walking does not have to be hurried in order to look more like running. Use it to regain a comfortable rhythm, check the next turn or simply continue the outing at a different speed. If you are following a published run-walk programme, use its structure rather than adding extra running each time the walking section feels easy.
An unplanned break can be useful too. A steep rise, a narrow gate or an uncertain patch of ground may be better walked. You can make that decision before becoming trapped in the idea that the whole route must remain continuous. The intended outing matters more than preserving a particular line on a graph.
Remove the pressure to repay it
Do not automatically run faster after a walk to recover the average pace. That treats the break as a debt and can make the next section unnecessarily demanding. Resume at the effort you intended, with walking still available if the route or your comfort calls for it.
When running with someone, say beforehand that breaks are part of the arrangement. This removes the need for a fresh apology each time. Agree whether the other person will walk with you or meet at a clearly defined point; avoid vague promises to wait somewhere further ahead.
In your notes, describe what the break achieved. Perhaps walking a crowded bridge made the route easier to manage, or a planned break kept the outing enjoyable. If you are repeatedly stopping because something hurts or feels abnormal, do not treat a run-walk label as a solution to that concern. Stop and seek appropriate help when needed. The useful distinction is between an intentional adjustment and a problem that requires attention, not between a supposedly valid run and an invalid one.
