Understand the shared space
Check the access rules, booking arrangement and instructions in use at that track. Different sessions may allocate lanes or areas differently. Ask the person responsible rather than assuming a convention from another venue applies. Know where warm-up, recovery and faster running are expected to happen.
Keep bags, drinks and clothing in the designated place away from the travelled lanes. If you need to read a session note or operate a phone, step into an appropriate waiting area. Do not stand just beyond a bend where approaching runners have limited time to react.
Before joining a lane or changing position, look for other users and follow the venue's instructions. A watch beep does not grant priority over someone already moving through the space.
Make the sequence clear on paper
Write the work and recovery parts separately, using units you understand. If a coach has prescribed the session, confirm any ambiguous shorthand before starting. Do not guess whether a number refers to metres, seconds or repetitions while already moving.
Choose how you will count completed efforts. A simple tally, programmed session or deliberate lap-button routine can work, but test it first. Keep a written backup if the sequence is unfamiliar. A device error should not force you to reconstruct the entire session from memory.
Know what happens at the finish of each effort: where to slow, how to move into recovery and how to return to the next start without cutting across another group. The end point matters as much as the start marker.
Leave room to adapt
If the track becomes crowded or an instruction changes, pause in a suitable place and reorganise. Do not chase a target through an unsafe gap to keep the interval record complete. The quality of the arrangement matters more than the appearance of the file.
Afterwards, compare the recorded laps with the sequence you intended. Correct your notes if a lap was missed rather than inventing a result. If you repeatedly lose count, simplify the recording method next time. The aim is to free attention for the session and the shared space, not to make running dependent on a complicated button routine.
