Start with the intended combination
Wear the jacket over the planned layers and add a cap or headlamp if you expect to use one. Close the front as it will be worn, then use the hood adjustments according to the instructions. Find out what each cord changes before pulling all of them tight. A complicated knot is not a substitute for understanding the adjustment.
Check the front edge, the back of the head and the area under the chin. The hood should not need constant hand support to remain in a useful position. If it only works with a bulky hat you will not actually wear, the fitting has not answered the right question. Repeat with the real combination rather than an approximate one.
Look sideways and down
Turn your head in both directions and notice whether the hood follows or leaves you looking into its side. Look down as you would to inspect the path, then back ahead. Check that the brim does not hide the ground you need to see. Perform these checks while stationary before adding movement.
Walk and jog briefly in a safe area. Notice flapping, slipping or pressure from a headlamp strap under the fabric. Stop before adjusting cords. Keep the free ends controlled so they do not strike your face or interfere with another item. If the arrangement blocks comfortable observation, change it or compare another hood shape before relying on it in poor weather.
Try the transition
Lower the hood and raise it again with the vest on. Can you reach the adjustment points and restore the useful fit? Test with gloves where relevant. A hood that fits after several minutes in front of a mirror may be awkward during a short stop. Make the sequence familiar without turning it into a speed contest.
After the trial, note the settings and the combination used. Recheck when adding a different cap, lamp or layer, since the space inside changes. Read the garment’s actual weather-protection description separately from this fit check. A comfortable hood is valuable, but fit alone does not establish the jacket’s suitability for every forecast or exposed route.
